#8 - Colour Card Dos and Don'ts

Colour Cards "Do do"

Sometimes it is necessary to create a sprayout card for a colour match. When going to that extent it makes sense to keep the card (and not just throw it away) for future matching reference.
Add it to your personal colour Library.
To do this be sure to put a coat of 2k clearcoat over the card. The 2K clear will give you an accurate colour reference showing the true pigmentation of the colour.
Note: Don't use 1K Clearcoats or wax and grease to check your colours as they will not give you the same colour pigment reflectance that a 2K Clearcoat does.

Colour Cards "Don't do"
A common “mistake” some Refinishers make after spraying-out a colour on a colour card, (once allowing it to dry), they then wet the card with a squirt of “wax and grease remover” to make it wet and glossy, and then check that against the car colour.
Yes, the wax and grease remover does make it shiny, but it doesn't give the same colour pigment reflectiveness that a 2k clearcoat does over that same colour.
This results in many colours appearing “lighter” and often on certain angles too much of a “violet” tone.
This false look can send the painter unnecessarily off in completely the wrong direction with unrequired tinting causing a huge waste of time = $$ job profit wastage.
