#11 - Degreasers & Panel Cleaners
Tuesday Tech Tip | | Written by: DBNZ Coatings
Degreasers are a very important part of the painting process.
All the DeBeer degreasers employ a method of wipe on, and then wipe off (with a clean dry rag before it dries)
Using the correct degreaser to clean the substrate is also of high importance.
DeBeer has 3 main types of degreasing cleaners.

Silicone (solvent) Degreasers:
Silicone (solvent) Degreasers are designed to remove road grime, tar, wax, polish, silicone, oil, grease, and many other petroleum based contaminates found on most surfaces.
Solvent degreasers can be used as a surface cleaner through every stage of the repair process.
Note: Solvent degreasers are not effective at removing organic contaminates, such as manure, blood, tree saps etc.
DeBeer 1-951 Silicone Remover Benefits:
- Removes all oily and greasy dirt
- Provides a perfectly clean surface for all solvent products
- Strong dissolving properties
- Not aggressive
- Slowly evaporating

Water Degreasers:
Water Degreasers are designed to remove organic contamination. They provide the final substrate clean to surfaces which are to be sprayed with Waterbase Basecoat.
Water Degreaser will give a final deep clean as well as reduce any electrostatic charge, therefore reducing the attraction of dust particles resulting in a cleaner finish.
Note: Waterbase degreasers are not effective in removing petroleum based contaminates.
DeBeer 9-851 WaterBase Degreaser Benefits:
- Creates a clean surface for the next steps
- Removes dirt that cannot be removed with a solvent cleaner, such as fingerprints and salt residue
- Discharges static electricity from plastic parts

Anti-Static Degreasers:
Anti-Static Degreasers are designed for the initial cleaning of plastics by drawing release agents from within and on the plastic to the surface where they can be wiped away.
Properly cleaned plastics are crucial for maximum paint adhesion.
Note: While this is the best cleaner for new or bare plastics it should not be used on previous or freshly painted surfaces before applying paint as its solvent strength is strong and may cause substrate issues (in this instance refer to Silicone Remover).
DeBeer 1-851 Antistatic Degreaser Benefits:
- Minimise dust inclusion during application
- Prevents electrostatic charging on plastic surfaces
- Ensures clean and prepared surfaces
- Dust prevention
- Electrostatic reduction
- Surface cleaning
Remember: Never allow degreasers to dry on a substrate surface without first wiping it dry/off with a clean dry cloth.
